The Executive Director, Field Medical Excellence will report to the Senior Vice President, Head of Global Medical Affairs (GMA) with primary responsibilities to drive the effectiveness, capabilities, and impact of our field medical teams. This role sets standards and best practices to optimize Medical Science Liaison (MSL) performance, ensure consistent scientific engagement, and align field insights with medical strategy. By championing excellence and continuous improvement, the FME Leader ensures the field medical function delivers measurable value to patients, healthcare providers, and the organization. This role leads a growing team of MSLs and will provide global strategic guidance in alignment with the company’s strategy across our portfolio. The FME lead will be a core member of the GMA Leadership team.
Responsibilities:
- Lead talent management for the field medical team, including recruitment, performance management, development plans, and retention.
- Develop, execute, and oversee the Field Medical Excellence strategy aligned with corporate and medical affairs priorities, as well as therapeutic area strategies.
- Design, implement, and oversee training and capability programs (scientific, compliance, soft skills, digital).
- Define and track MSL performance metrics and indicators to measure scientific engagement, insight quality, and impact.
- Lead the development and deployment of field tools and systems (CRM, digital engagement platforms).
- Drive best practices for scientific stakeholder engagement and insight capture and analysis.
- Foster collaboration with International, Medical Strategy, HEOR, Clinical Development, Operations, Governance, and Commercial teams to ensure consistency and compliance, and to align with broader medical affairs and business priorities.
- Partner with senior medical leadership to continuously optimize field team deployment, resourcing, and structure.
- Ensure alignment with compliance standards and global/local regulations in all field medical activities.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Life Sciences (PharmD, PhD, MD, MSc).
- 15+ years of experience in Medical Affairs, with 5+ years in field medical leadership roles.
- Multilingual proficiency (English required; additional languages are a plus).
- Deep understanding of MSL best practices, customer engagement, and medical insights processes (experience with Payors / Outcome Liaisons is a plus).
- Experience implementing and managing CRM/field systems (e.g., Veeva, Salesforce).
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence without authority.
- Strong project management, analytical, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated success in training and capability-building for field-based teams.
- Ability to travel, including international meetings and scientific congresses.
The range of starting base pay for this role is 243K - 334K. Actual starting pay will be based on a wide range of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, qualifications, education and location. In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for participation in either (i) our annual bonus program or (ii) a sales incentive plan.
