The Senior Medical Director, Global Medical Affairs, GI & Hepatology is a senior global medical leader responsible for shaping and executing the global medical strategy for the GI and Hepatology portfolio. This role provides strategic medical leadership across the product lifecycle and ensures scientific credibility, patient‑centricity, and value generation for key stakeholders including regulators, payers, healthcare professionals, and patients.
Reporting to the VP, Global Medical Strategy, this position serves as a core member of the GI/Hepatology franchise leadership and a key medical partner to Clinical Development, RWE, HEOR, Commercial, Market Access, and International Medical Affairs teams.
This is a hybrid role, with in-office attendance required Tuesday through Thursday.
Responsibilities
- Develop and oversee the global medical TA strategy for our therapeutic areas, ensuring alignment with corporate priorities.
- Lead talent management for the TA Medical teams, including recruitment, performance, management, development plans and retention.
- Develop Integrated Evidence Plans (IEP) in collaboration with HEOR, R&D, and other internal and external stakeholders by facilitating cross-functional partnership to ensure comprehensive evidence generation.
- Lead global launch readiness activities for innovative therapies, with emphasis on U.S. launches and strong collaboration with International Medical Affairs.
- Establish scientific communication platforms and lead global publication strategies. Build and maintain trusted partnerships with global and regional KOLs, scientific societies, and patient advocacy groups.
- Oversee global publication plans, congress strategy and participation, medical advisory boards, grants, and scientific communication platforms.
- Work in close partnership with cross-functional teams including Field Medical Excellence, Evidence Generation/HEOR, Medical Operations, Medical Information, International, R&D, Commercial, Market Access, and Regulatory, to ensure medical strategies are fully aligned with enterprise priorities.
- Ability to support Business Development initiatives by providing expert scientific insights that inform strategic decision-making.
- Ensure strict adherence to global and local codes (PhRMA, EFPIA, IFPMA), regulatory standards, and internal governance. Ensure appropriate governance of medical activities, including Medical, Legal, and Regulatory review processes.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Advanced scientific degree required (MD, PharmD, PhD or equivalent degree).
- Gastroenterology or Hepatology experience preferred.
- A minimum of 15 years in Medical Affairs within a global or regional experience.
- Multilingual proficiency (English required; additional languages are a plus).
- Proven experience leading and executing global medical strategy and launches.
- Strong skills in therapeutic area strategy, evidence generation strategy, stakeholder engagement, cross-functional project execution, and governance.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills that support strategic execution and stakeholder alignment.
- Proven ability to lead high-performing teams and collaborate effectively across internal and external cross-functional groups to achieve business objectives.
- Demonstrated success in fostering a culture of continuous improvement and aligning transitions with business goals to enhance adaptability and employee engagement.
- Deep understanding of healthcare systems, policies, and regulations, paired with a strong commitment to improving patient care and outcomes.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.
The range of starting base pay for this role is 247K-339K. Actual starting pay will be based on a wide range of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, qualifications, education and location. In addition to base pay, this position is eligible for participation in either (i) our annual bonus program or (ii) a sales incentive plan.
