DESCRIPTION OF JOB

Participates and leads the development of pharmaceutical products. Main area of focus is oral solid dosage forms:

  1. Experimental design and laboratory troubleshooting of predominantly oral solid dosage forms.
  2. Set-up, preparation, and execution of GMP and non-GMP production activities in house and contribute to the development activities at CROs.
  3. Drafting, reviewing, and approving technical protocols and reports
  4. Interpretation of data and preparation of technical presentations
  5. Internal and external communications with other operating functional groups (Quality, Regulatory, Stability, Supply Chain, Management, Contract research organizations (CROs), and others
  6. Product transfers, Process optimization and Scale-up activities following the principles of Quality by Design (QbD)
  7. Provide guidance and Supervision to lab technicians and/or junior chemists
  8. Performance evaluations of team members
  9. Scientific discussions/training
  10. Identify and execute the strategies to generate Intellectual property for the products.

 

Other:

Documents laboratory work in compliance with company policies, government regulations and GMP. Provides general support to Formulation and Process Development Department. Supervise technicians. Provide leadership in laboratory maintenance activities.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads specific laboratory and manufacturing operations
  • Performs new product development activities for oral solids/liquids, including tablets, capsules, liquids, suspensions, emulsions etc.
  • Conduct laboratory scale experiments using equipment like Mixers, Blenders, Granulators, Tablet press, Capsule fillers etc.    
  • Develops process and performs complex laboratory and manufacturing operations.
  • Trains technicians/ junior chemists on manufacturing/formulation
  • Identifies problems during compounding and manufacturing and recommends solutions
  • Leads formulation development study design and assists in project planning and project specific budgeting activities
  • Drafts written communications with both external and/or internal functional groups
  • Develops experimental protocols including R&D stability protocols
  • Effectively communicates with supervisors and project managers on project status and problems encountered
  • Documents work in compliance with Bausch procedures and Government regulations
  • Trains technicians on documentation following GMP and documentation practices.
  • Performs peer review of data for other staff members
  • Provides training, supervision and scheduling assistance for Technicians

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have sufficient manual dexterity to perform laboratory activities in a manner to provide precise and accurate results and work in a safe manner
  • May be required to move items weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • May be required to stand for long periods of time to perform laboratory work
  • Individual is required to wear and use appropriate protective equipment in laboratory areas
  • Must be able to work with standard laboratory chemicals under normal safety precautions and work with hazardous chemicals after proper training
  • Must be able to work with computers and general laboratory instrumentation
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Conduct an independent research/development work that is either patentable or publishable in peer reviewed journals
  • Presentation skills including the use of audiovisual techniques and clear understanding of technical projects

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (Minimum)

  • Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics, Chemistry or equivalent and 0-1 years of relevant industrial experience in formulation development. Knowledge of cGMP requirements
  • Master’s degree in Pharmacy, Chemistry or equivalent with 4-8 years of relevant experience in formulation development. Knowledge of cGMP requirements with relevant industrial experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Chemistry or equivalent with >10 years of relevant industrial experience in formulation development
  • HS diploma or GED with >20 years of relevant industrial experience
